Service Record 41-45

This is  a small print of Dad's unit vehicle markings.  Every vehicle in the Canadian Army was "marked" with  this type of sign on the front and back fenders of the vehicles in order for the vehicles to be identified.  This was for "road control".  During war THOUSANDS of vehicles are moving back and forth on all the roads etc.  So the military had to have some way to tell which vehicles belonged to who, which were "important" and which could "wait" at a glance without stopping the vehicles to ask "who are you buddy and where are you going".

The Military Police, who acted as traffic control on all MSR's (Main Supply Routes) would be told (have a list)  which vehicles needed to be on the road first, and which could wait.  So "ambulances" returning from the front may have had priority on the road, but not going forward.  And supply trucks may have had priority going forward, if the units ahead were in ACTION and needed the supplies desperately etc etc etc.

In detail below you will find under the Record , what was actually recorded by Army clerks. Reading across I think is self explanatory. It is amazing that even with the list of abbreviations sent to us by the Library and Archives Canada we were still at a loss.
Thanks to Canada at War volunteers for 'translating' this for us.
